RIVERSIDE BAPTIST CHURCH SUNDAY MORNING SERMON

"PREACHING FORGIVENESS OF SINS"

TEXT: Acts 13:38 - 40
READING: Psalms 33

SUBJ: The value to us of forgiveness of sins and the that which is communicated to us in forgiveness.

AIM: That we should meditate upon the great cost and the necessity.

INTR: It is good to review this passage often in that it puts into perspective the Gospel application in its transition from the Old Testament to the New Testament.

1. Some thoughts upon “be it known” as it relates to preaching. This is what we want to happen in preaching – that men should hear and know.
2. Many books have been written dealing with any number of topics, but all application must assume that the Gospel ahs been heard.
3. The divine objective is to forgive the sins of God’s people. The means is presented in the person of Christ our Lord.
THESIS: The burden of preaching is the gospel. The good news is that Christ has died and risen that He might grant the forgiveness of sins.

I. Through Whom

1. Purpose: (Acts 5:31 KJV) Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
2. (Luke 24:47 KJV) And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
3. Witness: (Acts 10:43 KJV) To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
4. Redemption: (Col 1:14 KJV) In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
5. The gift of God received: (Acts 26:18 KJV) To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.
6. Possession: (Eph 1:7 KJV) In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace…

II. To Whom

1. (Psa 32:1 KJV) A Psalm of David, Maschil. Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
2. An awareness: (Psa 130:4 KJV) But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared. AND (Psa 130:7 KJV) Let Israel hope in the LORD: for with the LORD there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption. AND (Eph 4:32 KJV) And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
3. (John 1:29 KJV) The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. (Consider: where does He take it?)
4. Effect: (Jer 31:34 KJV) And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
5. Personal issue: (2 Cor 5:19 KJV) To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
6. A wonder: (Micah 7:18 19 KJV) Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. {19} He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.

III. To What purpose

1. (2 Sam 12:13 KJV) And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.
2. (Heb 10:7 KJV) Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
3. A certain knowing and its effect: (Col 1:14 KJV) In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
4. The more excellent ministry: (Heb 8:6 KJV) But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
